Since 1981, 325 N 3rd Street has anchored Muslim life steps from San José State University. This year, Masjid Yaseen reopens its doors — restoring the five daily prayers, Jumu'ah, and a home for the community that built it.

Since 1978

Nearly fifty years of legacy

Congregational prayers here trace back to 1978, held in parks, homes, and offices before this building at 325 N 3rd Street became the first masjid in the South Bay in 1981 (later known as the SBIA Downtown Islamic Center). The Association of American Musallas now carries that legacy forward as Masjid Yaseen.

Our Timeline

From a room above a garage to downtown San José

1978

Founding Prayers

The community begins with congregational prayers held in parks, homes, and offices around San José.

1981

A Home Downtown

The community acquires the former American Legion building at 325 N 3rd Street — the first masjid in the South Bay.

1980s – 2020s

Serving Generations

The downtown masjid anchors Muslim life in the heart of San José, steps from San José State University.

2022

ICNA Relief Center

ICNA acquires the masjid with a vision of transitional housing, a refugee resource center, counseling, and educational services.

2026

Masjid Yaseen

The Association of American Musallas acquires the space and renames it Masjid Yaseen — opening a new chapter for the historic downtown masjid.

Parking: Street parking is limited downtown. On Fridays and for large events, please park across the street in the Salvation Army lot as a courtesy to our neighbors. Public parking is also available a few blocks away at the San José City Hall Garage (200 E Santa Clara St), where the first 90 minutes are free.

Common questions from neighbors and visitors — Muslim or not — thinking of stopping by.

Can anyone visit the masjid, even if they're not Muslim?+
Yes — visitors of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome. We regularly host neighbors, students, and community members who want to learn more or simply say hello. If you'd like a short tour, mention it at the door or reach out ahead of time through our contact info.
What should I wear?+
Modest, comfortable clothing that covers the shoulders and knees works for anyone visiting. Women may be offered a scarf to cover their hair while inside the prayer hall, though it isn't required to simply visit or observe.
Do I need to take my shoes off?+
Yes, shoes come off before entering the carpeted prayer hall — the same as most homes. Shelving is provided near the entrance, and this applies to everyone, Muslim or not.
Can I take photos or bring my camera?+
Casual photos of the building and architecture are generally fine — please just ask first, and avoid photographing people who are praying or who haven't agreed to be in a photo.
What actually happens during a prayer service?+
A prayer service (salah) involves standing, bowing, and prostrating in unison, led by an imam, usually lasting 10–20 minutes. Friday's Jumu'ah adds a short sermon (khutbah) beforehand. Visitors are welcome to sit quietly and observe from the back if they'd rather not participate.
